BEGINNING OF SAINT VINCENT

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and in Roman times. The beginning of Svetvinčent is connected with the monastery of the Benedictines from Ravenna, on the premises of the church of St. Vincent in the cemetery, and next to it the first small settlement is formed. It is mentioned independently in the document of Otto II. (983) as property of the Poreč bishop. In XIII. century, when the fief was acquired by the Castropola family from Pula (1211), the new urban center became the fortified building of the administrator, but Svetvinčenat was mentioned with the name of the abbey as early as 1325 in the Partition of Istria. After Castropol, the fief was further recorded as the property of the Morosini, Krotendorf and Poreč bishops.

MOROSINI-GRIMANI CASTLE

THE BEGINNINGS OF CASTLE

Morosini-Grimani Castle is one of the best-preserved castles on the peninsula and is the largest building in Svetvinčen, which has been a symbol of the place and destination for centuries. Over the centuries, the castle was gradually developed and upgraded, and it all started with the de Castro Pola family, when in the middle of the 13th century a domus (house) of the family of the same name functioned on the site of the castle palace. The de Castro Pola family was the feudal owner of Svetvinčent and its surroundings from the 13th century. until 1467, when the property passed into the hands of the Morosini family.

MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL

The medieval Morosini-Grimani castle, the Renaissance square, the loggia, the entire view of Svetvinčent are the perfect backdrop for creating an event that revives the medieval atmosphere. During the three festival days, about a hundred costumed participants - nobles, knights, archers, horsemen and medieval ladies - will vividly depict the everyday life of that historical period. Knight's camp, knight's duels, the infamous church inquisition, night sieges with catapults and fireballs are a small part of what awaits you in Svetvinčent.

During the festival, visitors will be able to visit a medieval fair, get to know old crafts and skills, taste traditional dishes, but also try archery, crossbow and many other old games. When the doors of the knights' camps open, look around and learn about the medieval equipment and weapons of real knights.
